Could you be a target for thieves? We've been hearing more and more about issues with theft within the RV community. Recently, a couple in a truck camper experienced a terrifying event when someone tried to steal their truck while they were asleep in the camper. Can you even imagine that situation? To help you avoid such unfortunate incidents, we found a great video from the Grateful Glamper YouTube channel that goes over 10 tips to protect yourself.

1. Lack of Robust Construction

RVs are not built as securely as traditional homes. Because RVs are designed to be lightweight and mobile, they often lack the robust construction and security features found in "sticks and bricks" houses. This makes them easier targets for thieves who can quickly break in. It's like giving a mouse a cheese buffet—too tempting to resist!

2. Unsecured Campsite Items

When RVers set up at a campsite, they often leave several items unsecured around their campsite. From fancy grills to expensive e-bikes, these items can be easy pickings for opportunistic thieves. It's almost like leaving cookies out for Santa, but instead of jolly old Saint Nick, you get a visit from the Grinch!

3. False Sense of Security

The RV community is known for its camaraderie and looking out for one another. However, this can sometimes lead to a false sense of security. Just because you're surrounded by friendly faces doesn't mean you should leave your guard down. It's like assuming your cat will guard the house—adorable, but not effective!

4. Lack of Security Measures

Many RVers don't invest in essential security measures like high-quality locks, security cameras, or alarm systems. This oversight can make them easy targets for thieves. It's like going to a sword fight with a butter knife—you're just not prepared!

5. Publicly Sharing Locations

Sharing your location on social media in real-time can make you an easy target for thieves. If potential criminals know where you are and that you're away from your RV, they can strike when you're not around. It's like sending an engraved invitation to a burglar, "Hey, I'm not home, come on in!"

6. Easy to Tow Away

Travel trailers and other towable RVs can be hitched up and driven away if not properly secured. Using wheel locks, boots, or hitch locks can prevent this. Otherwise, it's like leaving your car keys in the ignition with a sign that says, "Free ride!"

7. Poorly Lit Parking Areas

Parking in poorly lit areas can make your RV an easier target for theft. Thieves prefer to operate in the dark where they can go unnoticed. It's like playing hide and seek but forgetting to say, "Ready or not, here I come!"

8. Visible Valuables

Leaving valuable items like electronics, jewelry, and cash in plain sight can attract thieves. Keeping these items out of sight or in a safe can deter potential criminals. It's like dangling a carrot in front of a rabbit—too tempting to ignore!

9. Lack of Community Awareness

Not getting to know your neighbors or the campground staff can leave you isolated. Building a network of eyes and ears can help deter theft. It's like having a neighborhood watch but for your home on wheels—more eyes, fewer surprises!

10. No GPS Tracking

Not using a GPS tracker can make it difficult to recover your RV if it’s stolen. Devices like AirTags or built-in GPS trackers can help you locate your RV quickly. It's like losing your phone without "Find My iPhone"—good luck with that!
