When embarking on an RV adventure, it's essential to be prepared for any unexpected situations that may arise along the way. Having the right spare parts on hand can make all the difference between a minor inconvenience and a major headache. Just like carrying a spare tire, there are other crucial components you should consider keeping in your RV to avoid getting stranded or stuck in an undesirable situation. We recently came across a great video that highlights the top spare parts every RVer should have.
1. Spare Tire
Having a spare tire is a no-brainer when it comes to RV essentials. Most RVs come with a spare tire already mounted, but it's important to check its condition regularly. Make sure the spare tire is in good shape and not dry rotted, so you can rely on it if needed. You don't want to be stuck on the side of the road with a flat tire and no usable spare. Imagine the disappointment of having to cancel your camping plans because of a simple flat tire!
2. Fuses
Fuses are small but mighty when it comes to keeping your RV's electrical system running smoothly. Many components inside your RV rely on 12-volt power, and if a fuse blows, you'll need a replacement to get things back up and running. It's a good idea to keep a variety of fuses on hand, as you never know which one might decide to give up on you. Trust us, you don't want to be left in the dark (literally) because you didn't have a spare fuse!
3. Suspension Components
Leaf springs, bearings, shackles, and bolts are crucial components of your RV's suspension system. While you may not need to carry all of these RV parts all the time, having them on hand can be a lifesaver, especially if you're traveling to remote areas. A broken leaf spring or a worn-out bearing can bring your RV to a screeching halt, leaving you stranded until you can find a replacement. It's better to be prepared than to be stuck in the middle of nowhere, wishing you had packed that extra bearing!
4. Roof Sealant and Repair Tape
Your RV's roof is its first line of defense against the elements, so it's important to keep it in good condition. Having a tube of self-leveling sealant and some Eternabond repair tape on hand can help you quickly patch up any small leaks or tears before they turn into bigger problems. These items may not be readily available at your local hardware store, so it's best to stock up before hitting the road. You don't want to be caught in a rainstorm with a leaky roof, do you?
5. Plumbing and Electrical Supplies
Plumbing and electrical issues can be a real pain, but having a few essential supplies on hand can make repairs much easier. Consider keeping some spare plumbing fittings, such as Sharkbite connectors, and a crimping tool for pex piping. For electrical issues, pack some crimp fittings, butt splice connectors, and heat-shrink tubing. These small items can be a lifesaver when you're dealing with a leaky pipe or a faulty electrical connection. Plus, you'll feel like a real handyman (or handywoman) when you're able to fix the problem yourself!
